BASF's Wintershall subsidiary said at its annual press conference that it had successfully completed its second exploration well (SH-6) in the Shuwaihat field in Abu Dhabi and is now looking at development plans for the well.
The Shuwaihat sour gas and condensate field is located in the western part of Abu Dhabi, about 25 kilometers west of the industrial city of Ruwais.
Wintershall said it achieved this significantly faster and at a lower cost than planned. The SH-6 well was spudded five kilometers offshore in the Arabian Gulf.
Martin Bachmann Member of the Board of executive directors for exploration and production in Europe and Middle East said at the annual press conference: “From the results we have gathered from the successful drilling of the second exploration well means we have decided not to do any more exploratory wells for the time being. In 2018 we are looking at the different development plans that be used at the Shuwaihat field.”
Wintershall said it has already been active in Abu Dhabi for several years and plans to strategically expand its involvement in the region.
Wintershall’s CEO Mario Mehren said at the press conference “The Middle East is a core region for us and we’re expanding our activities in the region. We are discussing further development projects with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).”
