Chevron said it has resumed drilling for oil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), four months after suspending them during conflict between Baghdad and the autonomous region.
"Chevron can confirm that it has resumed its activities in the KRI and we have restarted drilling operations at our Sarta 3 well," the company said in a statement, according to Reuters.
Chevron halted drilling in October after Kurds overwhelmingly voted for independence in September’s referendum, sparking tensions with Baghdad.
Iraqi government forces took control of Kirkuk oilfields from the Kurds in October in retaliation for the vote, which was widely opposed by Turkey, Iran and Western powers. The Kurds saw the oilfields as a financial lifeline for a future state.
